African in America

Spoken word film · 5:09

It begins with a garment that once belonged to his late father. From there, a young man traces what it has meant to grow up African in America — the milk he was made to drink, the name teachers couldn't say, the security guard who walked him home from his own neighborhood.

It ends where it began: with the names his family gave him at birth, the story sewn into every thread, and the hope of passing it on.
